Bernhard Glockner

Bernhard Glockner

Although we know very little about Bernhard’s life in Germany we do know that he was willing to leave home and family and travel over 5,000 miles to a foreign land hoping to make a better life for himself and his family to come.  He was “one of that splendid class of staid, industrious, and frugal Germans that served to make up the greater part of the business community in earlier days” according to a newspaper article describing the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the original store on Market Street.  He was well and favorably known and universally respected as evidenced by the length of his funeral procession- the largest ever seen in the city.
